I was born in Columbus, Ohio, but I moved with my family to Colorado in second grade and then to Thousand Oaks, California in sixth grade. I loved Southern California, especially after I could drive to Zuma beach for body surfing. I was an average High School student. I attended UC Irvine as an Undergraduate. Science classes were easy, but I struggled with English.
I attended UC Irvine Medical school, finishing in 1979, and I completed my Internal Medicine training at Orange County Medical Center. My main interests during my medical training were Endocrinology and Rheumatology, but I decided not to specialize, so I would continue to see each patient without a biased perspective.
I moved my family to Redding in 1982 to escape the smog and congestion of the city. I practiced general Internal Medicine for seven years with an office on Court Street.
My wife, Nancy Sutton, and I operated a Diabetes Education Center in Redding for 13 years. This satisfied my interest in specialty care and the education side of a medical practice. The Diabetes Education Center closed in 1999.
As my children began their teenage years, I transitioned to Hilltop Medical Clinic, in order to have a more flexible schedule. I believe I will finish my medical career at Hilltop Medical Clinic.
