Why have a skin cancer screening?
Skin cancer is increasing in frequency. Sun exposure is a major risk factor. The risk increases with a high total accumulated sun exposure with the early years having a larger effect. A strong family history (genetics) of skin cancer is an additional risk factor.
There are three major types of skin cancer: Basal Cell, Squamous Cell, and Melanoma.
Prevention: Be informed and educated about your health. Limit your sun exposure and avoid sun burns. This also prevents wrinkles and premature aging of the skin. Children are more vulnerable; the effects of sun exposure are accumulative over a lifetime, so exposure at a young age cause proportionally more skin cancers. If you work outdoors, wear protective clothing and hats, and apply sunscreen daily to protect your skin.
Treatment: Early diagnosis and removal before it damages the local tissues, especially the eye and nose; or before it spreads to other parts of the body.
The Physicians at HTMC West will not be removing suspicious lesions during the skin cancer screening, however, patients with suspicious lesions will be referred back to their Primary Care Physician or Dermatologist for a second opinion and treatment.
